Housebound is a 2013 New Zealand comedy horror film written and directed by Gerard Johnstone. The film was released on March 10, 2014 at South by Southwest and stars Morgana O’Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Cameron Rhodes and Glen-Paul Waru.

Kylie (Morgana O’Reilly) is a would-be thief, sentenced to nine months of house arrest after she’s caught trying to rob an ATM.

Forced to move back in with her well-meaning mother Miriam (Rima Te Wiata), she soon starts to suspect the house she’s so loathed to live in, is haunted. When strange things start to happen, it prompts Kylie to begin to believe that her mother may have been right about the possibility of a spiritual presence in the house.
Her attempts to get help from the malevolent spirit disrupting her life are met with disbelief and accusation.
But with nothing else to do but try and solve the mystery, Kylie embarks on a spooky, adventure packed journey to find out the truth.

The film received a universally positive response after it’s debut at SXSW. Hitfix gave it an A and wrote “sometimes at the festival you walk into a room knowing nothing, sit down, and get your skull punched in by a movie that is calibrated perfectly, that knows exactly what it wants to do, and that seems almost unnaturally confident considering it was made by a first-time feature director”. Fangoria praised the film, rating it at 3 out of 4 skulls and stating that it “neatly carries some universal ideas about throwing away childish indignation and rebellion, and getting to know your parents as people with pasts and personal lives, not just nagging overseers.” Shock Till You Drop also gave Housebound a positive rating, as they considered it one of the highlights of South by Southwest. The Daily Texan said it was the best genre film at SXSW. said it was a breath of fresh air for the often stale haunted-house genre. Badass Digest told readers they had “a new favorite horror film of 2014”.

In April 2014, Housebound won the audience award at the Dead by Dawn festival in Edinburgh.

Housebound will be showing next at the New Zealand International Film Festival in July.
